J Crew Becomes First Major Retailer to File for Bankruptcy Due to Coronavirus

In what may be just the first in a wave of coming bankruptcies, J Crew Group has filed for Chapter 11 protection amid a mass of store closures due to coronavirus. The company operates both J Crew and Madewell brands, and CEO Jan Singer says they expect to emerge stronger and remain in business. The pandemic has been particularly hard on retailers with many brick-and-mortar locations, and more bankruptcies could be on the horizon.
